Arsenal board members are still weighing up giving Arsene Wenger a new contract, despite the possibility that the Gunners will end up both trophyless and outside the top-four for the first time in the French tactician’s time at the club, reports claim.

All parties will sit down in the summer to determine the future of the boss, who has been in charge since 1996, with a focus on avoiding the managerial uncertainty that dominated last season.

Either a formal announcement will be made that Wenger is leaving the club at the end of the season or they will extend his current deal beyond 2020, according to the Telegraph.

Wenger is determined for Arsenal to go all the way in the Europa League after their Premier League loss to Tottenham Hotspur left them eight points adrift of the top-four.

The Europa League looks to be their best route back into the Champions League but Wenger is in danger of missing out on silverware and a top-four finish for the first time during his time in the league.

They face Manchester City in the final of the EFL Cup in February, but victory in that competition would not secure a return to Europe’s premier competition.

Going forward, Stan Kroenke has backed Ivan Gazidis to restructure the club around Wenger as they look to easily transition into a new era.

Sven Mislintat and Huss Fahmy have arrived as head of recruitment and contract negotiator respectively and it was marked that the duo, along with Gazidis, all played a key role in the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

With director of football Raul Sanllehi also joining the club, Arsenal feel much better placed to deal with life after Wenger, although he may well be handed a new contract.
