Jose Mourinho should have sold Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba this summer and replaced him with Tottenhams Mousa Dembele.
That is the opinion of former Arsenal and England star Paul Merson, who says Dembele is up there with the best and would be a valuable addition to Mourinhos team.
Pogba has been persistently linked with a move from Old Trafford this summer and Barcelona reportedly presented a player-plus-cash deal to United chiefs this week.
While Pogba remains at United as the English transfer window closes, he could yet be sold to a foreign club before the end of August.
Dembele, meanwhile, has emerged as a top target for a number of Chinese clubs and may leave Tottenham as his current contract expires next summer.
Merson believes Manchester United should have contacted Spurs over a move for the Belgian, telling Sky Sports: Id buy Dembele tomorrow morning.
Hes one of the best players in the Premier League.
If I was Man United, Id sell Pogba tomorrow morning for £100m and buy Dembele. All day long. I think Dembeles up there with the best of the best.
Mourinhos United signed Brazil international Fred, Portuguese full-back Diogo Dalot and reserve goalkeeper Lee Grant earlier in the summer.
But a number of United fans have been left underwhelmed by the lack of activity at Old Trafford towards the end of the window.
Speaking on Thursday morning about Uniteds plans on deadline day, Mourinho said: Im not confident.
Im not confident and the market closes today so it is time at least for me to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed.
I will have to focus on the players I have in relation to this first couple of matches.
Maybe three matches because after Spurs there is national team and a couple of weeks to recover people and prepare people better and focus on players available.
Im not thinking about that list I give you, I focus on what we have.
