Lendy Cowes Week: Sailors battle difficult conditions on the Solent

Strong tides and a north-westerly breeze combined to create a day of close racing at Lendy Cowes Week today.

Team Lendy continued their consistent showings in the Sunsail F40 class, posting a second consecutive third place finish, behind the dominant Tenzing and Dubai International.

In IRC Class 5, Swuzzlebubble romped home three minutes clear of its competitors to take the overall category win with a race to spare.

That was in stark contrast to events in the Sportsboat class where the entire fleet finished within three minutes of each other after a 12.5-mile race. SpiderPig edged out Rum N Cork and Sunshine at the line.

There was another tight finish in the Dragon class, where Sankher finished just 21 seconds in front of Christianna and Ecstatic, with Sankher middleman Jeremy Field admitting they “stole in at the last mark” to claim victory.

Gareth Penns Christina took a closely-fought Victory class race, capitalising on a fast getaway to hold off Zinnia and Shearwater II.

The X One Design race provided quite a sight, with a huge fleet setting off from the Royal Yacht Squadron. Madeleine came through the pack to take the flag, ahead of the appropriately named XL and Madcap.

Strong winds are forecast for Friday, which should mean two sets of fireworks on the Solent.
