Gary Neville has criticised Paul Pogba’s performance against Newcastle United and called on Jose Mourinho to start turning Manchester United into a more effective and cohesive team.

The Red Devils lost 1-0 on Sunday as Pogba gave a laboured display in midfield, with Neville singling him out for the goal United conceded, saying: ‘He doesn’t even challenge for the first ball – that sums up Pogba’s day!’

He was equally critical after the match, saying the Frenchman was off the pace, and Neville has urged Mourinho to already begin forging a team that can win the title next season.

Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast straight after Sunday’s game, the former defender explained: ‘Manchester United are still quite a way off where he would want them to be.

‘Today, the talent is there, the individual talent is there, but then to coordinate that and massage that into a team is Jose Mourinho’s job over the next few months. He has to make them into a team.

‘I said it before the game, I say it even more after the game, Paul Pogba today – I don’t know whether he was injured or not – he looked well off it, and they do look like a team that play 5% below the intensity that they can play at, that they should play at.

‘And that to me is what Jose Mourinho has to try and do, he has to mould this talented group of players into a team that come together that can go and win a Premier League title.

‘Next season will be Jose’s third season and you would think in his mind, Man United’s mind, the fans’ minds, everyone’s minds, that he has to win the title next season and they need to start preparing for that now.

‘And games like today do damage confidence, they do take away the work that you’re trying to do. I still think they’ll finish second, they’re still in the FA Cup and Champions League, so there’s a lot still to play for – but they’re still having these types of moments where they let games drift.

‘Today they missed chances. They do miss chances. They are sloppy in the final third with that last moment, so many times, and they’ve got to improve that, they’ve got to become killers in the final third and they are not at the moment.’
