Chelsea have approached Roma to enquire about the possibility of signing Italy international Alessandro Florenzi during the summer transfer window, reports say.
With intense speculation surrounding the future of manager Antonio Conte, the Blues are yet to make a signing this summer.
But they have identified versatile Roma star Florenzi as a target and have signalled that they will rival Juventus and Inter Milan for his signature.
The Italian spent eight years in Romas academy before breaking into the clubs first-team in 2011. He has since played over 200 games for the Serie A outfit.
According to La Gazzette dello Sport, he is set to bring his stint at Roma to an end this summer after talks over a contract extension broke down.
His current deal expires next summer so Roma may be willing to sell him now to avoid losing him for free in 2019. It is claimed the club are unwilling to meet his wage demands.
Juve and Inter are both known admirers of Florenzi but Chelsea have joined the list of clubs hoping to sign the 27-year-old, who can play in midfield or at right-back.
After recovering from a serious knee injury, Florenzi played over 40 games for Roma last season, featuring against Chelsea and Liverpool in the Champions League.
Chelsea cannot afford for the speculation over Contes future to impact on their transfer policy after a frustrating season in which they missed out on the top four.
On Sunday, star man Eden Hazard admitted that he wanted to know who the club would sign this summer before committing to Chelsea.
Yeah, I want to know. I want to know, but like I say I am focused on the World Cup, the Belgium international said.
If we have something new – manager or players – it is always good to know it because I want players that can [help bring success back to] Chelsea next season.
But to be fair the transfer market is not here [in full flow] yet. We will see after.
