Unai Emery has revealed Granit Xhaka will play a key role in his new-look Arsenal side after the Switzerland international signed a new long-term contract with the club.
The 25-year-old was signed by Arsene Wenger just over two years ago but has shown only flashes of the ability which persuaded the now former Arsenal boss to spend £35million on him.
Emery has already identified central midfield as an area in need of strengthening and the the club are on the verge of agreeing a deal with Sampdoria for Uruguay international Lucas Torreira.
Despite Torreirias impending arrival, Emery believes Xhaka will be a central part of his plans next season.
Emery said: Im delighted that Granit has extended his contract with us.
Hes an important member of the squad and is still young so will be able to develop even more.
I hope he has a successful World Cup with Switzerland and comes back fit and ready for the new season.
Xhaka, meanwhile, sent a message to his followrs in Twitter, saying: Hi Gunners, its Granit.
Im happy and proud to sign a new contract here for Arsenal and I hope for good results here in the future.
Arsenal confirmed that the contract renewal is subject to the completion of regulatory processes.
