Manchester United fans were treated to a first glimpse of summer signing Fred after he took part in training on Thursday in Los Angeles – and he has finally been assigned a shirt number.

The Brazilian completed a £52million move to Old Trafford shortly before the start of the World Cup and, after a three-week holiday, jetted into LA to link up with his new teammates for the first time.

Fred is still a long way short of match fitness and suffering from jetlag, so only took part in an individual training session with head of strength and conditioning Gary Walker.

Freds arrival in LA means he was at last given a shirt number, inheriting the No.17 previously worn by Daley Blind before he re-joined former club Ajax last week.

Before the Dutchman, Nani spent seven seasons in the No.17 shirt, while Raimond van der Gouw and Andy Cole have also worn it in the past.

Freds arrival in the US is a big boost for Jose Mourinho and his threadbare squad, though the £52m man will not be fully fit in time to take on Liverpool in Michigan on Saturday.

Speaking about the depleted squad he has been forced to take to the US, Mourinho bemoaned last week: Pre-season is very bad, I have to say that.

The only positive thing of pre-season is for the young boys that have a fantastic opportunity to train with us and know what it is to be a Manchester United first team player.

Next week will come De Gea, Matic and Fred which is good, especially for Fred, a new player to be with us. But everything is really bad. Then we go [back] to the UK and we have to play Premier League.

Im worried. I have to be worried. Im worried because Im not training and then [we] go to the Premier League without lots of players. But we have to try to make the best out of it and work with the players we have here.
