Unai Emery has defended Mesut Ozil after Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness blasted the Arsenal star again this week.

Ozil, 29, announced his decision to retire from international duty following Germanys disastrous defence of their World Cup title in Russia earlier this summer.

The midfielder cited racism and disrespect as primary reasons for quitting after an explosive reaction to photographs of him alongside Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Hoeness hit out at Ozil immediately after his announcement, claiming he had played s*** for years, and the Bayern chief has been on the attack once again.

I am glad that this scare is now over. He had been playing s*** for years, Hoeness told Sport Bild.

He last won a tackle before the 2014 World Cup. And now he and his s*** performance hide beyond this picture. It is a miracle that he is now captain at Arsenal.

Emery, hoping to manage his first Premier League win against West Ham this weekend, defended Ozil and claimed that the Arsenal family will be doing everything to help the playmaker.

We are here to help him, the Spaniard said.

We are his family and it is his home. We are used to being criticised but we are professional. In our careers, as coaches and players, we are going to receive criticism.

When we do well, they are going to speak about us well. We need to live with this. Here, we need and we want to help him.

Paul Merson urged Emery to drop Ozil from Arsenals starting XI as the German lacks the work rate and pressing game to succeed under the Spaniard.

He hasnt got the players to have a 20-yard gap between defence and attack, working hard. Ozil and [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan are not those type of players, Merson told Sky Sports.

If you were building a team tomorrow, youd want to play a high pressing game, work as a team, not to have gaps between the lines, and youre not buying Ozil and Mkhitaryan.

If you go the Arsene Wenger way, wanting to play entertaining, free-flowing, great football, then Ozil and Mkhitaryan will walk in any team in the world but they will not get in teams that want to press!

I dont know if the current crop have gone past being able to learn that way of playing. Thats my concern. I dont mean regarding their age, but in the way they play the game.

Ozils future? I dont know. Im a big fan of him, hes a quality player, but sometimes you watch him and the game passes him by.
