Philippe Coutinho has admitted that he has fallen short of expectations at Barcelona after enduring a hugely frustrating 2018-19 season.

The 26-year-old became Barcelonas all-time record signing when joining from Liverpool in a deal worth up £142m in January 2018 and was tipped to replace Neymar in Ernesto Valverdes side.

Following a promising opening six months in Spain, though, Coutinhos form plummetted and he has been subjected to intense criticism from the clubs notoriously vociferous supporters.

Coutinho, who was regularly booed by his own fans, managed just five goals and two assists in 34 La Liga matches last season and he admitted that his form was not good enough.

Speaking ahead of Brazils Copa America opener against Bolivia on Saturday, Coutinho told Marca: I have not had a good season.

My performances have been a lot worse than I expected they would. The only way to improve and gain confidence is through hard work, and I have been working hard.

After Coutinho failed to make an impact during Barcelonas shock Champions League semi-final reports emerged that the club are keen to sell him to balance their financial accounts.

According to ESPN, Barcelona are hoping that Coutinho impresses at the Copa America so that they can sell him at a reduced fee of €100m.

Both Chelsea and Manchester United have been linked with bringing him back to the Premier League, while PSG are also believed to be monitoring developments.
