Jurgen Klopp has insisted that Rhian Brewster has an important role to play for Liverpool this season after the youngster scored twice in their 6-0 win over Tranmere Rovers.

The highly-rated 19-year-old started Liverpools opening pre-season match at Prenton Park and impressed with an assist and two confident finishes before coming off at half-time.

Brewster, who won the Golden Boot when Englands U17 side lifted the World Cup in 2017, has endured an injury nightmare after being sidelined for 15 months with a serious ankle injury.

He finally returned to fitness in April and Klopp hinted that he would compete with senior strikers Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi for a place in Liverpools attack following Daniel Sturridges departure.

Brewster joined Liverpools academy in 2014 after spending six years at Chelsea and was rewarded for his progress on Merseyside with a five-year contract last June.

Injury problems have delayed Brewsters impact on the first-team and although he is yet to make his senior debut, he was named on the bench for the thrilling 4-0 win over Barcelona in May.
