Manchester United are considering offering Ole Gunnar Solskjaer transfer funds in January for a new midfielder, according to reports.

Solskjaer failed in attempts to land his top midfield targets during the summer, with United priced out of moves for Newcastles Sean Longstaff and Sporting Lisbons Bruno Fernandes.

However, with both players still available at their respective clubs, the Manchester Evening News claim the board are weighing up a big January signing to strengthen Uniteds midfield.

While summer addition Daniel James has shone for United in front of goal, the clubs midfielders have struggled to produce the goods so far this season.

Solskjaer has insisted his players need time to adjust to his demands and dismissed concerns about the quality and depth in his squad.

United sit eighth in the Premier League after collecting just five points from their four games so far this season.

The Red Devils pocketed £73million from the sale of Romelu Lukaku to Inter and have room on their books for another big earner after the departure of Alexis Sanchez to Italy on loan.
