A cyclist has died after swerving to avoid a swooping magpie in Australia, police have said.
The man, 76, was riding in Woonona, about 35 miles south of Sydney, when he veered off to avoid the low-flying bird.
He crashed into a fence post, causing him to fall from the bike and suffer serious head injuries.
Emergency services then rushed him to hospital, where he later died from his wounds.
Officers from Wollongong Police District are now investigating the incident and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
Australia is now entering magpie swooping season, which occurs every September and October during the countrys spring time.
The birds begin breeding in August and can become very territorial towards any perceived threats to their young.
