Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau says he cannot remember the number of times he has worn blackface.

It comes after three pictures emerged showing him wearing racist brownface make up.

The scandal has harmed Mr Trudeaus chances during an election campaign, with pollsters showing that his lead on the rival Conservatives was down from 69 per cent to 60 per cent, since the revelations were made.

In the first photo to emerge from 2001, the politician was shown wearing brownface makeup at a 2001 Arabian Nights costume party.

Quizzed on exactly how many times he has worn brownface, as more pictures were unearthed, he said: I am wary of being definitive about this because the recent pictures that came out, I had not remembered.

When pressed once more on how many times, he said: Frankly, I didnt understand how hurtful this was to people who live with discrimination every day.
