A six-year-old child was handcuffed, taken out of school and made to pose for a mugshot by police because she had a tantrum at school and ended up kicking a teacher.

The teacher had allegedly grabbed Kaia Rolle by her wrists to try to calm her down while at school in Orlando, Florida, US.

After she lashed out, the school resource officer at Lucious And Emma Nixon Academy Charter School arrested the little girl.

She was taken to a juvenile centre on a charge of battery. School resource officers (SROs) have similar powers to police officers and are on call in schools across the US.

Kaias grandmother Meralyn Kirkland said she told police Kaias temper was a side effect of sleep apnoea, a medical condition that means breathing stops and starts while you sleep.

During the day, people with the condition feel very tired, find it hard to concentrate, have mood swings and commonly suffer from headaches.

Meralyn said that when she explained this to police, officer Dennis Turner responded: Well, I have sleep apnoea, and I dont behave like that.
